48 Major US Shipping Ports: A Practical Guide for Importers
Choosing a US destination port is an important part of planning an international shipment. Los Angeles, Long Beach, New York and New Jersey, and Savannah are familiar names, but the United States has a much broader network of commercial ports.
Some ports specialize in international container shipping. Others focus on vehicles, machinery, steel, agricultural products, energy cargo or regional distribution.
For importers shipping from China to the USA, the right port depends on the cargo, available shipping services and final delivery address. A lower ocean freight rate does not always produce a lower door-to-door shipping cost.
In questa guida, BRF LOGISTICS introduces 48 selected US ports and explains how to compare gateways for FCL, LCL and inland delivery.
About this list: These 48 ports are a selection for educational purposes, not the total number of US ports or an official ranking. The list includes coastal, river-access and Great Lakes ports. Not every port offers regular container services suitable for general cargo shipped from China.

1. Where Are the Main US Shipping Ports?
US freight ports serve several distinct geographic regions.
| Regione | Representative Ports | Main Planning Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| West Coast | Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma | Trans-Pacific shipping, western US distribution and inland connections |
| Costa orientale | New York and New Jersey, Savannah, Charleston and Virginia | Northeast and Southeast distribution, plus selected inland destinations |
| Gulf Coast | Houston, Mobile and New Orleans | Texas, southern industrial markets and specialized cargo |
| Great Lakes | Duluth–Superior, Cleveland and Detroit | Industrial cargo, bulk commodities and regional waterborne transport |
| Alaska and Hawaii | Port of Alaska and Honolulu Harbor | Connections to markets outside the contiguous United States |
The phrase “contiguous 48 states” refers to geography. It does not mean the United States has only 48 ports.
2. West Coast and Pacific Ports: 12 Selected Gateways
The US West Coast is an important entry region for cargo from Asia. For general container shipments from China, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma are common gateways to compare.
| No. | Porto | State | Main Cargo or Shipping Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Porto di Los Angeles | California | International container shipping and Southern California distribution |
| 2 | Porto di Long Beach | California | Trans-Pacific container trade, warehousing and inland connections |
| 3 | Porto di Oakland | California | Container imports and exports serving Northern California |
| 4 | Porto di Seattle | Washington | International freight gateway in the Pacific Northwest |
| 5 | Port of Tacoma | Washington | Containers, vehicles and inland transportation connections |
| 6 | Port of Portland | Oregon | Vehicles, grain and other marine cargo; container service availability requires confirmation |
| 7 | Port of San Diego | California | Vehicles, refrigerated cargo and breakbulk shipments |
| 8 | Port of Hueneme | California | Vehicles, agricultural products and specialized cargo |
| 9 | Port of Stockton | California | River-access port handling bulk commodities and project cargo |
| 10 | Port of Richmond | California | Vehicles, liquid bulk and dry bulk cargo |
| 11 | Port of Alaska, Anchorage | Alaska | Regional supply chains and marine-to-land distribution |
| 12 | Honolulu Harbor | Hawaii | Freight handling and distribution serving the Hawaiian Islands |
Los Angeles or Long Beach: Which Port Should You Choose?
Los Angeles and Long Beach are neighboring ports, but they are separate gateways with different terminals and operating arrangements.
The choice should consider:
- The shipping line and available sailing.
- The actual discharge terminal.
- The final warehouse or delivery address.
- Container pickup and empty return arrangements.
- Available free time and inland transportation costs.
For cargo delivered within Southern California, compare local drayage and warehouse arrangements. For inland destinations, compare rail service, transloading and trucking with alternative routings through other US ports.
When Should Importers Consider Oakland, Seattle or Tacoma?
Oakland is worth comparing for Northern California deliveries. Seattle and Tacoma are important options for the Pacific Northwest and selected inland transportation routes.
The most suitable gateway depends on the shipment’s origin, service availability, delivery deadline and total logistics cost.
3. East Coast Ports: 16 Selected Gateways
East Coast ports serve major consumer markets, manufacturing regions and distribution networks. For cargo from China, an East Coast routing should be evaluated alongside the cost and time of moving goods inland from a West Coast port.
| No. | Porto | State | Main Cargo or Shipping Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | Port of New York and New Jersey | New York / New Jersey | Container imports and distribution serving the Northeast |
| 14 | Porto di Savannah | Georgia | Container shipping and Southeast distribution |
| 15 | Porto di Charleston | South Carolina | Containers, vehicles and manufacturing supply chains |
| 16 | Port of Virginia | Virginia | International container shipping through facilities including Norfolk and Portsmouth |
| 17 | Porto di Baltimora | Maryland | Vehicles, roll-on/roll-off equipment and containers |
| 18 | PhilaPort / Port of Philadelphia | Pennsylvania | Containers, refrigerated food and breakbulk cargo |
| 19 | Porto di Boston | Massachusetts | Container shipping and regional freight serving New England |
| 20 | Port of Wilmington, North Carolina | North Carolina | Containers, forest products and regional distribution |
| 21 | Port of Morehead City | North Carolina | Bulk, breakbulk and project cargo |
| 22 | JAXPORT, Jacksonville | Florida | Containers, vehicles and roll-on/roll-off cargo |
| 23 | PortMiami | Florida | Container trade and South Florida distribution |
| 24 | Port Everglades | Florida | Containers, energy cargo and regional trade |
| 25 | Port of Palm Beach | Florida | Caribbean trade and regional freight |
| 26 | Port of Wilmington, Delaware | Delaware | Fruit, refrigerated cargo and specialized commodities |
| 27 | Port of Brunswick | Georgia | Vehicles, roll-on/roll-off and machinery shipments |
| 28 | Port of Portland, Maine | Maine | Regional marine freight and container services |
Understanding the Port of New York and New Jersey
A quotation referring to “New York” may cover the wider Port of New York and New Jersey system. The port name alone does not identify the exact container pickup location.
Before arranging delivery, confirm the discharge terminal, release status, pickup requirements and empty return location.
These details affect trucking distance, appointment planning and the final delivery schedule.
Avoid Confusion Between Ports with the Same City Name
Two pairs of names require particular attention:
| Port Name | Ubicazione |
|---|---|
| Wilmington, NC | North Carolina |
| Wilmington, DE | Delaware |
| Portland, OR | Oregon |
| Portland, ME | Maine |
Always include the state when requesting a quotation or checking booking details.
4. Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Ports: 14 Selected Gateways
Ports in this region support container trade as well as energy, chemicals, grain, steel and heavy industrial cargo.
A port with substantial cargo tonnage is not automatically the best choice for a standard container shipment. Its cargo facilities and available shipping services must match the shipment.
| No. | Porto | State | Main Cargo or Shipping Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29 | Porto di Houston | Texas | Containers, steel, industrial equipment and petrochemical-related cargo |
| 30 | Port of Corpus Christi | Texas | Energy, liquid bulk and industrial cargo |
| 31 | Port of Beaumont | Texas | Breakbulk, equipment and project cargo |
| 32 | Port of Port Arthur | Texas | Forest products, steel and other breakbulk cargo |
| 33 | Port of Galveston | Texas | Roll-on/roll-off, vehicles and breakbulk cargo |
| 34 | Port Freeport | Texas | Containers, vehicles, project cargo and industrial shipments |
| 35 | Port of Texas City | Texas | Petroleum, chemicals and liquid bulk |
| 36 | Porto di New Orleans | Louisiana | Containers, breakbulk and river-to-ocean connections |
| 37 | Port of South Louisiana | Louisiana | Grain, energy and industrial bulk cargo along the Mississippi River |
| 38 | Port of Greater Baton Rouge | Louisiana | Agricultural products, energy and river-to-ocean freight |
| 39 | Port of Lake Charles | Louisiana | Energy, petrochemicals, bulk and industrial cargo |
| 40 | Porto di Mobile | Alabama | Containers, steel, forest products and bulk commodities |
| 41 | Port Tampa Bay | Florida | Containers, bulk cargo and regional supply chains |
| 42 | Port of Gulfport | Mississippi | Containers, refrigerated cargo and regional trade |
Is Houston Always the Best Port for Texas Deliveries?
Houston is an important gateway to compare, but the best routing depends on the final address and the available transportation service.
A delivery near Houston may require a different inland arrangement from a shipment bound for Dallas or another Texas city.
Compare the complete transportation chain, including ocean freight, destination charges, container pickup and rail or truck delivery.
5. Great Lakes Ports: 6 Selected Gateways
The Great Lakes are part of the US commercial port network. Certain international cargoes can reach the region through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
However, navigation seasons, vessel dimensions, cargo requirements and available services must be checked for each shipment.
| No. | Porto | State | Main Cargo or Shipping Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43 | Port of Duluth–Superior | Minnesota / Wisconsin | Iron ore, grain, bulk commodities and large project cargo |
| 44 | Port of Chicago | Illinois | Great Lakes and inland waterway freight, bulk and industrial cargo |
| 45 | Port of Detroit | Michigan | Steel, industrial materials and breakbulk cargo |
| 46 | Port of Cleveland | Ohio | Steel, breakbulk and selected international shipping services |
| 47 | Port of Toledo | Ohio | Grain, minerals, bulk and project cargo |
| 48 | Port Milwaukee | Wisconsin | Bulk commodities, breakbulk and machinery |
Does “Shipping to Chicago” Mean the Vessel Calls at Chicago?
Not necessarily.
For general container cargo from China, a shipment quoted to Chicago may discharge at a coastal port and continue by rail to an inland terminal. A truck may then complete delivery to the customer.
Importers should distinguish three locations:
| Termine | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Porto di scarico | The port where the container is unloaded from the ocean vessel |
| Place of Delivery | The contractual delivery point, which may be an inland terminal |
| Final Delivery Address | The customer’s warehouse, factory, residence or project site |
These locations may be different. Confirming them before booking helps prevent misunderstandings about service scope and charges.
6. How to Choose a US Port When Shipping from China
Start with the Final Delivery Address
The final delivery address should guide port selection.
A destination described only as “USA,” “New York” or “Texas” is usually insufficient for an accurate door-delivery comparison.
Provide the full address and ZIP code so the forwarder can evaluate trucking distance, inland connections and receiving conditions.
Match the Port and Service to the Cargo
Different cargo types require different handling arrangements.
| Tipo di carico | Key Planning Questions |
|---|---|
| Fences, furniture and general building materials | Is FCL or LCL more suitable? Can packages be stacked? |
| Macchinari | What are the dimensions, individual weights and loading requirements? |
| Oversized equipment | Is an open-top, flat rack or another shipping method required? |
| Vehicles and mobile equipment | Is container or roll-on/roll-off shipping available and suitable? |
| Chemicals and coatings | What is the transport classification, and what documentation is required? |
| Refrigerated goods | Are the required temperature controls and handling facilities available? |
A port’s general handling capability does not guarantee acceptance by every carrier, terminal or sailing.
Compare Total Logistics Cost
A useful comparison includes more than the ocean freight rate.
Depending on the agreed scope, costs may include:
- Factory pickup and origin handling.
- Export documentation and customs arrangements.
- Ocean freight.
- Destination terminal or warehouse handling.
- Customs clearance services.
- Container drayage or LCL collection.
- Rail or truck transportation.
- Final delivery.
Also clarify how inspections, storage, demurrage, detention, chassis, waiting time and special delivery services would be charged.
Compare quotations with the same service scope and delivery point.
Check FCL and LCL Destination Arrangements
FCL and LCL shipments may use the same seaport but follow different arrival procedures.
An FCL shipment generally involves container pickup and empty return. An LCL shipment typically requires deconsolidation at a destination warehouse before collection or delivery.
For LCL cargo, check the destination warehouse location and handling charges as well as the ocean freight rate.
Confirm Inland Transportation Before Loading
If the shipment will continue by rail or truck, confirm the relevant cargo and loading requirements before the container is packed.
For heavy machinery, consider individual piece weights, support areas, weight distribution, blocking and securing.
A container’s total weight alone does not establish that the load is suitable for every transport stage.
Confirm the Customer’s Unloading Capability
Before booking door delivery, establish whether the receiving location has:
- A loading dock.
- A suitable forklift or crane.
- Space for the delivery vehicle.
- Appointment requirements.
- Restrictions on vehicle access.
- A need for liftgate service.
Liftgate service has weight and size limitations. Heavy equipment may require a separate unloading arrangement.
7. Which US Gateways Should You Compare for Different Destinations?
The following table provides a starting point for route comparison. Final selection depends on actual service availability and shipment details.
| Final Delivery Region | Gateways or Routes to Compare |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles and Southern California | Los Angeles and Long Beach |
| San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California | Oakland |
| Washington State and the Pacific Northwest | Seattle and Tacoma |
| New York, New Jersey and nearby markets | New York and New Jersey |
| Georgia and parts of the Southeast | Savannah |
| South Carolina and surrounding areas | Charleston |
| Virginia and nearby markets | Port of Virginia |
| Texas | Houston and other viable intermodal routings |
| Florida | Jacksonville, Miami, Port Everglades or Tampa Bay |
| Chicago and the Midwest | Coastal port plus rail or truck transportation |
| Wisconsin, Kentucky and other inland destinations | Route comparison based on ZIP code and inland delivery requirements |
8. Frequently Asked Questions About US Shipping Ports
Are There Only 48 Ports in the United States?
No. This article presents 48 selected ports. It is not a count of all US commercial ports.
Port totals vary depending on whether a source counts port authorities, individual ports, terminals, coastal facilities or inland waterways.
What Is the Largest Port in the USA?
The answer depends on the measurement and reporting year.
Container traffic is commonly measured in TEUs, while total cargo tonnage includes bulk commodities, liquid cargo and other freight. A ranking by tonnage can therefore differ substantially from a container-port ranking.
For an actual shipment, cargo suitability and the final delivery route are more useful than ranking alone.
Can I Ship a Container from China to Every Port on This List?
Do not assume that every listed port has a suitable regular container service from China.
Carrier schedules, transshipment arrangements, terminal acceptance and inland delivery options must be confirmed before booking.
Which US Port Is Best for LCL Shipping?
The best option depends on the final address, available consolidation service, destination warehouse and total delivery cost.
The nearest seaport is not always the least expensive LCL gateway once warehouse handling and inland transport are included.
Does Port-to-Port Shipping Include Delivery to My Warehouse?
Port-to-port service does not automatically include warehouse delivery.
Confirm whether the quotation covers delivery to a seaport, an inland terminal, a deconsolidation warehouse or the final address.
Quali informazioni sono necessarie per ottenere un preventivo di spedizione?
Provide the cargo description, package count, dimensions, gross weight, total volume, origin address and US destination ZIP code.
Also identify special handling requirements and whether customs coordination and final delivery are required.
