Shipping from China to CANADA: Fast, Affordable & Reliable Logistics Solutions

Shipping Cost from China to Canada

Your freight rate – that is, how much it will cost to transport cargo from China to Canada – is determined by factors including type of goods, mode of transport, dimensional weight, and the distance from exact origin to exact destination.

This guide to freight rates from China to Canada uses data from real-time sources to give you a better understanding of what it costs to get your goods from China to the Canada.

Container transportation rates and prices for August 2025

Ocean freight rates –

The Freightos Baltic Index (FBX) has a trade lane of “China/East Asia to North America West Coast” (FBX01). This route includes Canadian/American West Coast ports such as Vancouver. The latest index shows that the approximate rate for a 40 foot full container (FEU) from China/East Asia to the west coast of North America is around USD $2300 per container.

But please note:
This index is usually a “port to port” spot rate, excluding additional fees such as door-to-door services, inland transportation, customs clearance, and port charges.

Since mid August, freight rates on the East Coast have dropped by 70% to $1800/FEU. Due to slowing demand and excess capacity on trans Pacific routes, carriers have cancelled their originally scheduled GRI and are reducing peak season surcharges

There are many influencing factors

The following factors can lead to significant price differences:
Port of departure: Shanghai/Ningbo/Shenzhen and other major ports vs inland ports or small ports; The further away from international ports, the higher the cost.
Goods type: ordinary dry goods vs refrigerated/dangerous goods/oversized, with the latter having significantly higher rates.
Container type: Standard 40 ′ vs High Container (HC) vs Other types.
LCL vs FCL: Although LCL is expensive per unit volume, it has a lower total cost and is more friendly to small batches.
Capacity shortage/peak/off peak season: High season or unexpected events (such as port congestion, rising fuel costs, etc.) may push up rates.
Port fees and customs clearance fees: Port fees, import taxes, and transportation to warehouses in Canada will also increase significantly.

LCL vs FCL Shipping — China → Canada

FactorLCL (Less-than-Container Load)FCL (Full Container Load)
Best ForShipments under ~15 CBM (or smaller quantities) Shipments that fill a whole 20-ft or 40-ft container, or use most of its capacity
Container UseShared space in a container with other shippers’ goods Dedicated container; your shipment alone, sealed at origin
Cost StructurePay per cubic meter (CBM), often with a minimum charge; there are additional handling/consolidation costs. Flat rate for the full container; costs per CBM tend to be lower given you maximize use of the container’s capacity.
Typical RatesLCL approx USD $50-$100 / CBM from China to major Canadian ports (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal) in current market. FCL 20′ or 40′ containers: ~ USD $3,000-5,500 (20′ GP) and ~ USD $4,000-6,600 (40′ GP / HC) depending on destination and season.
Transit TimeUsually 1-2 weeks longer than FCL due to consolidation & deconsolidation steps. Sea transit from China to Canada around 25-45 days depending on ports. Faster port-to-port sea transit as there’s no need to wait for other shipments to fill container. Similar 21-45 day ranges depending on origin/destination.
Cargo Safety / RiskMore handling points → higher risk of damage, misplacement. Shared container means multiple touchpoints. Your goods are the only ones in the container → fewer handling steps, lower risk.
Customs / DocumentationMore complex: multiple consignments share space → more coordination, possible delays in sorting / inspection. Simpler: one shipper, one consignee, cleaner paperwork, fewer parties to coordinate.
Ideal Use CaseSMEs, small batches, when budget is limited and you don’t need speed. Large importers, full production runs, when you want to reduce cost per unit volume and reduce risk.
FCL Shipping

When to Choose LCL:

  • Your shipment volume is 1-15 CBM

  • You need to ship immediately without waiting to fill a container

  • Testing new products/markets

  • Budget is primary concern

  • Flexible on exact arrival date

FCL Shipping from China

When to Choose FCL:

  • Shipping more than 15 CBM

  • High-value or sensitive cargo

  • Strict delivery timelines required

  • Special container needs (refrigerated, open-top etc.)

  • Simplified customs preferred
